The Off-Road Holiday Points Series at Hobby Action RC Raceway has come to a close, and team drivers James McDonald and Shawn Horton locked in the overall win in their respective classes.
Mini 1/14 (or as Hobby Action calls it, Mini Grom)
James has been always been extracting the maximum performance out of his EMB-1, regularly securing top-qualifier and P1 over the last year, and the points series was no different.
During last weekend's Mini main, we saw how dialed in his setup and driving was, with over 98% consistency and finishing out two laps ahead of P2! Absolutely insane.

Setup basics:
- 1/14 EMB-1 4WD Buggy RTR
- Rear CVAs
- Carbon upper deck
- Carbon front/rear shock towers
- Shock Tower Cover V2
- Titan Brushless Micro Servo T2807
- All aluminum suspension parts (L6083, L6084, L6085)
- 5 mm aluminum wheel hexes
- Touring car tires/foams (hobbysoul brand on Amazon) on Scale Speed wheels for durability
- 1.2 mm front / 1.1 mm rear shock springs
- 42.5 wt front / 40 wt rear shock oil
- 10k front / 5k rear differential oil
- 14 mm ride height
- 17T pinion
- 1.2 mm front/rear sway bars
- 1 deg toe out front / 3 deg toe in rear
- -2 deg camber all around
Meanwhile, Scale Speed owner Chris Byars came in 2nd overall with his fully optioned EMB-1, regularly battling for position with the very fast Brandon Foisy every weekend.
Rocking the XR14, 2848 4600 kV, Gens Ace 2200 mAh hardcase, Enhanced Battery Holder, titanium turnbuckles, titanium screw set, Titan servo, 7075 aluminum gearboxes, the car is decked out, but the driver tends to send it around the track focusing on fun over lap times, regularly doing backflips and testing the durability of the metal poles throughout Hobby Action's layout:
17.5 4WD Locked Timing
Hobby Action is home to some very fast drivers, with the 17.5 locked timing classes being extremely competitive. The leaders often qualify fractions of a second apart, with the entire A-main lineup having mere seconds between each other.
Coming into the series with an underdog vehicle amidst the crowd of B74, B84, and XRAY platforms, team driver Shawn Horton consistently kept his LC10B5 V2 at the top, showing that it can not only hang with the mainstream platforms, but dominate.
Its affordable price makes it an easy entry into the world of 4WD racing, or something different to add to your lineup to keep things interesting. It's fun to be different, and do well with it.
